Serrano Brings DMV Mobile Outreach to the Bronx

Senator Serrano talks with seniors at the Melrose-Mott Haven Senior Center in the Bronx

Bronx, NY - State Senator José M. Serrano (D-Bronx/Manhattan) today brought the DMV Mobile Outreach Team to the Melrose-Mott Haven Senior Center in the Bronx. Thanks to extensive community outreach by the Senator's office, DMV officials were able to process nearly 80 non-drivers ID cards for local residents.

The Mobile Outreach Team set up a full DMV processing line, registering people on site and taking their pictures for new identification cards. Residents should be receiving their new cards in about 2 weeks, as per normal DMV procedure.

"We all find it inconvenient to wait in the long lines at the DMV," said Senator Serrano, who sits on the Senate Aging Committee. "For many seniors, the inconvenience can turn into severe hardship. For this reason, I am proudly sponsoring the Mobile Outreach Team's visit to the Melrose-Mott Haven Senior Center."

The DMV event was part of the Senator's regularly scheduled constituent service days in the Bronx. "I am only afforded one district office for a very big area, and so I have worked tirelessly to create my own mobile outreach." The Senator's staff was on hand to provide assistance on issues that range from housing to healthcare.

"It has always been one of the most enriching parts of my job to visit senior centers in the district, particularly when we can bring important services," said the Senator adding that, in poor economic times, he is fighting harder than ever to protect the centers from devastating cuts.

Last month, he crafted letters to the Governor and Mayor, urging a halt to centralization plans that will negatively impact seniors in the 28th District, and throughout the city. The letters garnered the support of the entire Bronx Senate delegation.
